Did You Know?

"Talk Straight," a music video by the Chapel Hill, North Carolina based band The Old Ceremony received the Gold Award for Best Music Based Video at the Everglades International Film Festival in South Africa. The video was produced by UNC Communications Professor Gorham Kindem and merges video footage from Kibera taken from volunteers of CFK, footage from the feature film Bend It Like Beckam and footage of the UNC Women's Soccer Team.

*Carolina for Kibera honored in Oklahoma City with the Reflections of Hope Award.

*Carolina for Kibera serves 25,000 people a year through a health clinic, a summer youth sports program staffed by UNC-CH volunteers and other programs. The organization has closed indefinitely because of rioting in the wake of last week's disputed presidential election. Read the story!

*Binti Pamoja alumnus Fatuma, 22, reports from Kenya's post-election conflict. "The centre of the violence [in Nairobi], in my opinion, is where I live. And it’s affecting everything,” she said from her home. Fatuma added that nothing in her community was running normally. Conflict has been affecting everything from electricity and water to food supplies. Some people have been forced to leave their homes, fearing for their lives. “Our lives are at a standstill,” she said. “It’s very tense and I’m scared.” Read the story!

*University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill senior class officials have decided which organization they will support as their class gift, following in the steps of the preceding class by donating money to a cause. Senior marshals voted unanimously to give to Carolina for Kibera - a nongovernmental organization that fights poverty and promotes nonviolence in Kenya. Read the story!
