SPORTS AIDS OUT

kao photoThe Youth Sports Program is also tackling HIV/AIDS through its Kicking AIDS Out! (KAO) project.  Twenty young men and women aged 13 to 20 make up the Kicking AIDS Out peer education team.  Every weekend the team attends soccer matches and engages youth by playing soccer skills-related games.  Afterwards, facilitators help participants to relate the game to life skills and HIV/AIDS education.  Participants and KAO volunteers engage in a frank discussion and aim to answer tough questions, including “What is HIV/AIDS?” “How can you prevent HIV infection?” and “What are the consequences of substance abuse?”  In this way, participants connect their own real-life experience to the information offered in the discussion.

In return for the service to their community, active peer educators are eligible to receive educational scholarships that allow them to attend high school or other vocational programs.  The KAO team attends regular leadership training and is required to attend refresher courses about HIV/AIDS to keep knowledge sharp and improve communication.  Our innovative team is always discovering new ways to apply its unique approach to peer education in diverse environments, including at local schools, with other youth groups, and with soccer teams throughout Kibera.
