HIV/AIDS PREVENTION PROGRAM INTEGRATION

With the support of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, CFK launched an HIV/AIDS Prevention Program in Kibera that encourages youth ages 10-18 to become peer educators of safer sex practices and methods of disease prevention in their communities.  The goal of the program is to strengthen CFK’s ability to implement and manage HIV/AIDS education programs and improve the utilization of HIV/AIDS prevention activities and other sexual and reproductive health information and services among youth ages 10-24.  Additionally, the project is designed to enhance the capacity of CFK staff and volunteers to implement and manage HIV/AIDS testing, counseling, and more comprehensive education and prevention campaigns.

In 2007, the CFK HIV/AIDS Prevention Program served nearly 2,000 youth.  The volunteer counseling and testing (VCT) Center registered with the Kenyan Ministry of Health and tested 500 youth for HIV/AIDS, 25% of whom tested positive.  Peer education, participatory education theatre, and youth outreach efforts highlighted contraception education and distribution in 2007.  21 new peer educators were trained on reproductive health issues, and 36 peer educators received continuing education training.
